I have just completed my replay of the Sport of Kings campaign game. I have written a brief recap of the season below, along with detailed statistics. I also have some files containing the game & stats sheets that I used with
the game. If you are interested in these, then just let me know, and I will E:Mail you the files.

SPORT OF KINGS

Having started this replay many months ago, I have today completed my 26 week season replay.

For those of you not familiar with the game, I will give a brief run through of the mechanics.

The game is what I would call a ‘solo management’ type game, similar to ‘Two Furlongs From Home’ and ‘Grand Prix Circus. I enjoy this type of game very much, and have previously completed seasons of  TFFH and GPC. The idea of the game is to pick a stable from the eight provided, and make it the wealthiest one at the season’s end. Each stable has a string of 8 horses, with a mix of Platers, Handicappers and Classic Hopes. In the campaign version of the game, you have to guide your horses through a 26 or 13 week season, deciding when to race them and when to rest them. You are also provided with 4 jockeys (apprentice, stable, first class and top class), and it is up to you to decide when and on what horses they race. There are restrictions on the number of times that horses and jockeys can race in the season, so you need to plan your season’s racing with care. Each week of the season contains 5 races, and these cover the whole range of flat races available. The races are all, I think, based on real life races, and therefore include low value handicap races right up to the classics i.e. The Derby. Prize money is awarded for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd, and you can place a bet on any horse in a race (including other stables’ horses). You do however; have to pay entrance fees for each horse, so you need to weigh up the cost of the fee against the potential winnings from the race. Also at the end of the season prize money is awarded to the top 3 apprentices and top 3 jockeys. Everything that might happen in a real race is catered for. There will be different types of going, which will affect each horses performance, the class of the jockey will also affect performance, and in a handicap race the horses’ current handicap weight will come into play. You are also able to produce horses as superbly fit a couple of times a season, which will boost their performance. All of the decisions for the other stables’ horses are neatly taken care of by the game system. There is a fair bit of book keeping to do, but I always find this as much fun as the races themselves.

So how did I get on, you must be asking yourselves?

I’ll give a brief recap of my season here, but if you want full details, these can be found in the current (October) issue of Electronic Replay Report.

It would be fair to say that the season started fairly slowly for my stable, and after 5 weeks I was in 7th place with a measly £17,566 and only 3 wins for my horses. In week 7, however, my horse ‘Loreil’ won the Classic 1,000 guineas race and a purse of £75,000. This took me into 2nd place with total earnings of £95,666. In week 10 the stable earned £26,700 and went into the lead with £159,266. Things got even better in weeks 12 & 13, with a Class A race win for Loreil (£75,000),  2nd place in the Irish 1,000 Guineas for Loreil (£20,000), 3rd place in the Irish 2,000 Guineas for Golden Boy (£7,000) and 1st place in the Irish 2,000 Guineas for Edinburgh (£75,000). So, at the halfway stage of the season, my stable was in 1st place with £330,166.

The highlight race of the season, the ‘Derby, took place in week 15. The stable was pinning its’ hopes on our horse ‘Golden Boy’, and never was a horse better named. He won the race and with it the purse of £200,000! This put us well in front of the other stables, and seemingly on course to be the wealthiest stable, come the end of the season. Although the rest of the season was not as successful as it might have been (the best results being a 3rd place for Golden Boy in the Irish Derby earning £25,000 and a 2nd place in the same race for Edinburgh earning £60,000), the hard work had already been done. At the end of the 26 weeks, the stable had amassed £595,966. As well as our horses performing well, the stables’ apprentice and jockeys also had a great season. Our apprentice ‘Skelly’ won the apprentices championship by 30 points and earned £40,000. In the jockeys championship our stable jockey ‘Whetstone’ won by 13 points earning £200,000 and our top class jockey ‘Gatty’ came second by 4 points earning £100,000. This made our total earnings for the season £935,966, £482,050 more than our nearest challenger the ‘Border’ stable. In a season containing 130 races, we managed 23 1st places, 23 2nd places and 26 3rd places. So we placed or won in over half of the races, a pretty good performance. Our top horse based on earnings was ‘Golden Boy’ with £239,000, and the top horse based on finishes was Artemis with 3 1st places, 4 2nd places and 4 3rd  places.

So was it worth all the effort?

Yes, most definitely. It’s a great game to replay, and you do have to make a big commitment of time to complete it. But if you are prepared to do that (there are rules for a shorter 13 week season) then I’m sure you will enjoy the game.

Just one final thought for Terry. I did it! I completed one of your games and finally beat the system! ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
